Burnout: The Silent Epidemic
I spent a decade on the job as a Firefighter Paramedic. I’ve worked the forced shifts. Buried the anger. Showed up after sleepless nights and trauma that no one talked about. Like most of us, I wore the badge - and the silence that came with it. I dealt with passive suicidal thoughts, silent addiction, and a darkness I couldn’t put into words. And I kept showing up, because that’s what we’re trained to do. But when leadership chose politics over people, and the system demanded more than I could give, my body made the call I wouldn’t. Three surgeries in 18 months. Burnout wasn’t a trend - it was survival.
I didn’t leave because I couldn’t hack it. I loved that job. I left because I refused to die for it.
That’s when I uncovered what no one ever teaches us: how to regulate the nervous system, process trauma through the body, and actually heal. I also learned that we've lost something valuable in the first responder world as we promote command staff: Mentorship.
